Flavin tended to his horses, and Risley, Yand and the three soldiers had departed in a flurry and a hurry of hooves, leaving Aswin, Bostra, and Dubric alone in the courtyard. Aswin asked, “How long have the dead been plaguing you, Dubric?”

Bostra turned to them both, his eyes narrowing.

Dubric said, “If you boys will excuse me, I’ve got to see to my castle.”

“I know that’s what Risley saw,” Aswin said as Dubric stepped away. “Flavin’s glove is a blood gauntlet, made before the Demon Wars to help the tribes hide from Demons. I’ve read all about them. A Demon could be seen from miles away, even through stone walls. That glove’s purpose was to give the people time to hide, to save lives, but it showed other things too.”

Dubric stopped and shook his head.

“I’ve never heard of such a thing,” Bostra said.

Aswin watched Dubric. “Few have. Nuobir was the last known person to have used one. He wrote about them in one of his journals. Demons and their followers glow red, priests and clerics white, Plests gold. It was a handy tool for recognizing allies from enemies.” He paused for a moment then added, “The dead and the dying supposedly were black.”

“Never you mind about that,” Dubric said.

“I have to,” Aswin replied. “It’s what I do. Can you see them, or do you just feel them?”

Dubric looked at him and said, “Never you mind.” Then he turned and walked away.

“You think he sees the dead?” Bostra asked.

Aswin nodded. “Yes, and that would help explain his typically cheerful demeanor, wouldn’t you say?”

Bostra nodded and they set off to cross the courtyard with Aswin’s arm slung over Bostra’s shoulders. They took a few steps then paused, smelling smoke on the air.

“We had better hurry,” Aswin said and Bostra agreed.
